Mini Abdominoplasty

The presence of a large, sagging abdomen is a common concern for both women and men. The causes are varied and include obesity, weakening of the abdominal muscles, pregnancy, skin laxity, major weight loss, and more. In many cases, however, the problem is mainly limited to the lower abdomen below the navel, with a small amount of excess skin and localized fat deposits. In such situations, a mini abdominoplasty combined with liposuction of the abdominal area can be performed.

What is mini abdominoplasty?
Mini (or partial) abdominoplasty is a procedure designed to remove excess fat and skin from the lower abdomen (below the navel) without repositioning the belly button.

How is mini abdominoplasty performed?
The procedure is usually carried out under general anesthesia or epidural anesthesia with sedation and lasts approximately 1–2 hours.
An incision is typically made along the bikini line, just above the pubic area, similar to a cesarean section incision.
The skin and fat of the lower abdomen are lifted only up to the level of the navel. If necessary, liposuction may be performed to further improve the contour of the abdomen and waist.
Excess skin and fat are removed, and the area is tightened using internal absorbable sutures. In some cases, a small drain may be placed under the skin to prevent fluid accumulation.

What should I expect after surgery?
As mentioned above, the procedure lasts approximately 1–2 hours, and an overnight stay in the clinic is usually recommended. Pain is generally mild and is easily managed with simple analgesics such as Depon or Lonarid or similar pain relievers. You will be able to stand and walk a few hours after surgery; however, you may need to walk slightly bent forward at first to reduce tension on the sutures. The drain, if placed, is usually removed the following day. The sutures are typically internal and absorbable, so no removal is required.
For the first few weeks after surgery, wearing a supportive abdominal garment is recommended to support healing and prevent fluid buildup under the skin.

When can I return to my activities?
You may resume light activities within one to two days and return to light work within 7–10 days. Full return to normal activities, including exercise, is usually expected within 2–3 weeks.
