Thigh reconstruction after massive weight loss
Thigh lift is a surgical procedure performed to correct sagging of the inner thighs following massive weight loss. The procedure removes excess skin and fat from the inner thigh area, restoring a firmer and more contoured appearance.
How is the procedure performed?
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia or under epidural anesthesia with sedation and lasts approximately 2–3 hours.
The type of procedure depends on the extent of skin laxity. If the laxity is limited to the upper inner thigh, the incision is made only along the groin crease so that it can be concealed within underwear or swimwear.
However, if the laxity extends along the entire inner thigh — as is commonly the case after massive weight loss — the incision is made along the inner thigh from the upper area down to the knee in order to remove all excess skin. The incision is placed sufficiently toward the back so that it is not easily visible from either the front or the back.
What should I expect after surgery?
As mentioned above, the procedure lasts approximately 2–3 hours and requires an overnight hospital stay. The sutures are internal and absorbable. Pain is not usually severe and is managed with simple analgesics such as Depon or Lonarid.
Postoperatively, the use of a special compression garment is required for approximately one month in order to reduce swelling.
The scars will initially appear red and slightly firm. Gradually, they will soften, turn pink, and eventually fade to a lighter color, leaving a fine scar. Proper scar care with specialized regenerative creams and silicone sheets is recommended to help accelerate this process.
When can I return to my activities?
From the first day after surgery, you may get up and walk, but it is advisable to limit your activity for one week. Return to light work is recommended after 7–10 days, while full resumption of normal activities is expected after about one month.
